How to Build a Social Media Strategy for 2027: A 10-Step Planning Guide for Brands
Key takeaways

  • Start 2027 planning with one business goal per quarter, not a list of platforms
  • Audit what 2026 actually delivered before you copy any trend report
  • Pick two core platforms and one test channel, and budget for people as well as AI tools
  • Write your crisis and response rules into the strategy, because audiences now judge brands by how fast they answer on social

To build a social media strategy for 2027, start with one business goal per quarter, audit what 2026 really delivered, choose two core platforms your audience uses, budget for people as well as AI tools, write down your response rules, and review results every month. The rest of this guide walks through each step in the order I use with brands.

I have spent more than 20 years in content, social media and PR, and the most common mistake I see in planning season is the same every year: teams start with platforms and trends, then try to attach a business goal at the end. In 2027 that mistake will cost more, because budgets are tight and AI has made average content cheap and everywhere. A clear strategy is now the difference between being seen and being scrolled past.

Why plan your 2027 social media strategy now?

Plan in October and November because budgets are being set right now. Most finance teams lock next year’s numbers before the holidays, and a strategy that arrives in February has to fight for money that is already allocated. Planning early also gives you time to audit 2026 properly instead of guessing.

The money is not growing much. The Gartner 2026 CMO Spend Survey (Gartner, May 2026) found marketing budgets rose only slightly, to 7.8% of company revenue in 2026 from 7.7% in 2025. The same survey found CMOs put an average of 15.3% of marketing budgets into AI initiatives, yet only 30% report mature AI readiness. In plain terms: flat budgets, more spent on tools, and many teams not yet ready to use them well. Your 2027 plan has to show exactly what each dollar does.

The 10-step 2027 social media strategy checklist

Here is the full process on one page. Use it as your planning agenda.

Step What you decide Output
1. Business goal One measurable goal per quarter Goal sheet signed off by leadership
2. 2026 audit What worked, what didn’t, what it cost One-page audit summary
3. Audience Who buys, where they spend time Two or three audience profiles
4. Platforms Two core platforms plus one test Platform plan with reasons
5. Content pillars Three to five themes you own Pillar list with examples
6. Formats and cadence Video, carousels, posts, live Monthly content calendar
7. People and AI Who writes, approves, posts, replies Roles and tool list
8. Budget Content, management, paid, tools Annual budget by quarter
9. Response rules Reply times, escalation, crisis steps One-page response playbook
10. Measurement KPIs tied to the goal Monthly dashboard and review date

Step 1: What business goal should your 2027 strategy serve?

Your strategy should serve one business goal per quarter, written as a number with a date, such as “200 qualified demo requests from LinkedIn by March 31”. Social goals like followers or reach only count if you can show how they lead to that business number.

Most brands need one of four things from social: awareness in a new market, leads, sales, or reputation. Pick the one leadership will actually judge you on. If you try to serve all four equally, your content will be vague and your reports will be impossible to defend.

Step 2: How do you audit your 2026 social media results?

Export twelve months of data from each platform, then answer three questions: which posts drove business results, which platforms cost the most time for the least return, and what your audience asked about most in comments and messages. Keep the summary to one page.

Look beyond engagement rate. Check which posts sent traffic to your website, which ones started sales conversations, and where your team spent hours with nothing to show. The questions people ask in your comments and DMs are the best content research you will get all year.

Step 3 and 4: Which platforms should your brand use in 2027?

Choose platforms by where your buyers already are, then commit to two you can run well and one you test. In the US, YouTube and Facebook still reach the widest adult audience, while LinkedIn is the core channel for B2B and executive audiences.

The latest Pew Research Center social media fact sheet (Pew Research Center, October 2026, survey conducted January to June 2026) shows the share of US adults who say they use each platform:

Platform US adults who use it (2026)
YouTube 84%
Facebook 70%
Instagram 51%
TikTok 37%
LinkedIn 31%

Reach is only half the decision. A B2B software brand might reach fewer people on LinkedIn than on Facebook and still get far more buyers there. A consumer food brand might do the opposite. Match the platform to the buyer, then to what your team can produce every week without burning out.

Step 5 and 6: How do you choose content pillars and formats?

Pick three to five content pillars your brand can speak on with real authority, such as your expertise, your customers’ problems, your process and your people. Then match each pillar to a format your chosen platforms reward, mainly short video, carousels and useful text posts.

In my experience, the pillars that last are the ones only your brand can talk about: what you have learned, what you make, and the questions your sales team hears every day. AI tools can help you draft and repurpose, but they cannot supply the point of view. That has to come from you.

Turn the pillars into a monthly calendar so the plan survives busy weeks. If you need a starting point, my free content calendar template lays out a month by pillar, platform and format.

Step 7: Who does the work, and where does AI fit?

Write down who drafts, who approves, who posts and who replies, with names, before you pick any tools. AI should speed up research, first drafts and repurposing, while people own strategy, final voice, approvals and every sensitive reply.

Gartner’s 2026 media spend findings (Gartner, June 2026) report that 38% of marketing leaders cite a lack of internal AI expertise and talent as the top barrier to AI-driven efficiency. Buying tools without training people is how brands end up with more content and fewer results. If your team is small, decide early which jobs stay in-house and which go to an agency or consultant.

Step 8: How should you budget for social media in 2027?

Budget in four lines: content production, community management, paid promotion and tools. Tie each line to the quarterly goal it supports, and keep a small reserve for testing a new format or platform mid-year.

The same Gartner release found awareness and conversion now take 62.6% of total media spend, while spending on customer loyalty and retention has fallen to less than 15%. That is a gap brands can use. Social media is one of the cheapest ways to keep existing customers close, so make sure your 2027 plan includes content for people who already buy from you, not only for new audiences.

Step 9: Why do response rules belong in your strategy?

Audiences now expect brands to answer in public, on social, and fast. Write reply-time targets, escalation contacts and a short crisis checklist into the strategy so nobody improvises when a complaint goes viral.

Sprout Social’s Q2 2026 Pulse Survey (Sprout Social, June 2026, 2,250 social media users in the US, UK and Australia) found 64% say it is important for brands to respond publicly on social media rather than through a press release or website statement, and 84% say a brand’s response speed directly affects their view of a crisis. This is where PR and social meet. For a ready template, see my crisis communication plan; it was written for restaurants, but the structure works for any brand.

Step 10: How do you measure a 2027 social media strategy?

Measure three levels every month: business results tied to your goal, platform signals that lead to those results, and effort, meaning hours and spend. Review the dashboard monthly and change one thing at a time so you know what worked.

A simple monthly scorecard might track leads or sales from social, website visits from social, saves and shares, reply times, and cost per result. Hold a quarterly review where you are allowed to drop a platform or pillar that is not earning its place. A strategy that never changes is a calendar, not a strategy.

Should you plan alone or bring in a consultant?

Plan alone if you have a clear goal, clean data and a team that can execute. Bring in a consultant if leadership wants measurable targets you have never set before, if you are entering the USA, Canada or another new market, or if your team is busy but unsure what it is building toward.

This is the work my Strategy Consultancy service covers: the audit, goals, platform choices, budget and measurement plan, built so your own team or agency can run it. If you want a second pair of eyes on your 2027 plan before budgets lock, Book a free discovery call.

Frequently asked questions

When should a brand start planning its 2027 social media strategy?

Start in October or November. That gives you time to audit 2026 results, agree budgets with finance before January, and brief your team or agency so the first quarter runs on plan instead of guesswork.

Which platforms should a brand focus on in 2027?

Choose by audience, not hype. In the US, YouTube and Facebook still reach the most adults, Instagram reaches about half, and LinkedIn matters most for B2B. Pick two core platforms you can do well and one channel to test.

How much of the marketing budget should go to social media in 2027?

There is no single right share. Gartner reports total marketing budgets near 7.8% of revenue in 2026. Decide the social share by your goal, then use a budget calculator to price content, management and paid media together.

Do I need a social media strategy consultant?

You need one if your team executes well but lacks a plan, if leadership wants measurable goals, or if you are entering new markets. A consultant sets direction and measurement; your team or agency runs the daily work.
