Questions about ROI and ROAS

What is the difference between ROAS and ROI?

ROAS (return on ad spend) is revenue divided by ad spend: a 4x ROAS means $4 back for every $1 on ads. ROI (return on investment) is profit after all costs, divided by all costs. A campaign can have a good ROAS and still lose money once product costs, fees and tools are counted, which is why the calculator shows both.

What is break-even ROAS?

The ROAS at which you make zero profit. It equals 1 divided by your profit margin, adjusted for any costs beyond ad spend. With a 40% margin and no other costs, break-even ROAS is 2.5x: anything above it is profit.

What is a good ROAS?

There is no single good number, because it depends on your margin. A ROAS above your break-even ROAS makes money. A business with 80% margins can profit at 1.5x, while one with 25% margins needs more than 4x.

What should I put in profit margin?

The share of each sale you keep after the cost of the product or service, before marketing. Service businesses usually keep more of each sale than shops that buy stock. If you're not sure, leave it at 100% to see ROI based on revenue alone.
